NEA Task 6: Understanding Audience (Mass Market)

 

1. What is a mass market audience?

A mass- market audience is the vast majority of people with a common interest, view or trend they wish to express and follow.

What is an independent cinema?

An independent cinema is one which is listed on the ICO website and is not part of the 3 main chains which dominate the market such as Odeon, Vue and Cineworld. They are independently regulated and contain  mixture of mainstream, niche small audience films3.

What is OnScreen magazine?

On Screen magazine is a free publication and website available in independent cinemas who's origin comes from an independent cinema in Truro Cornwall. 

1. What different sections are there on the OnScreen website and how do these sections appeal to a mass market audience? They are varied. including features, news reviews, trailers, movies, a win section and infomation about obtaining a cinema pass. 

1. How does the latest edition of OnScreen magazine (May/June 2023) appeal to a mass market audience?

It depicts one of the big budget Hollywood films designed to appeal to a majority audience.

It also shows a prize winning competition as one of the things on the front cover which may appeal to a younger audience 

 

1. What is meant by the term cross-media convergence?

Cross- media convergence is when conventions from other types of media are found within other media products. It also applies when a product upholds multiple forms and references appear in order to make a link to a product or media form. 

1. Is there any cross-media convergence* between the magazine and its website? 

Yes, the colour pallette is similar to the print version along with the language used. The Masthead is the same on both the website on the magazine. |There are also links from the website to the magazine and from the magazine to the website. This identifies them both to be a collective. Similar fonts are used to show synergy between the two products.
